Dimcha        Pavlikeni        Veliko Tarnovo

Our Guest House is situated in the small, quiet village of Dimcha, close to the town of Pavlikeni and 40 km from the cultural centre of Bulgaria, Veliko Tarnovo.

Dimcha ( Димча in Cyrillic ) has approximately 500 residents and an area size of just over 20 km². It is about 250m above sea level and is 164 km from Sofia, the Capital. Summers are very hot with temperatures of between 25 – 40 ºC and winter brings heavy snows and freezing cold evening temperatures. There are no tourists or foreigners in Dimcha, just friendly villagers with a high percentage of curious and helpful younger people. There is no crime, no discos or nightspots, no pollution or litter and no loud cars or people, just peace and quiet, pleasant walking areas, fresh clean air and a corner shop and local bar. Surprisingly for such a small village there is a thrice daily bus service to nearby Pavlikeni and Veliko Tarnovo.

The area around Dimcha is hilly with views extending across the valleys, rivers, vineyards and rose fields to the Balkan mountains in the near distance. There are several lakes nearby with the largest being the Stomboliiski Dam, well known for its water sports and excellent fishing – including enormous European Catfish reaching up to 2m in length. The nearby forests boast some of the best hunting in the world with an incredible range of fauna and flora.

The neighbouring village of Suhindol is famous for its wine that is exported worldwide. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot... All the grapes made famous by the renowned French wines grow equally well here and the local wines are gaining an excellent reputation. The majority of villagers here make their own red wine and they are equal in quality to many of the more expensive European wines.

Pavlikeni ( Павликени in Cyrillic ) has a population of 13,997 and is at an altitude of 144m. It was originally a centre for ceramics and pottery in Roman and Thracian times, its original name was Marinopoltsi. It has developed a reputation for excellent craftsmanship and trading helped by its situation on the main Sofia – Varna railway line. It is also close to the new Sofia – Varna motorway which reduces its distance to the beaches and airport to a mere 1 hour by car. In Pavlikeni you will find supermarkets, hairdressers, shops, restaurants and bars. It is surrounded by many "Eco zones", places preserved and protected for their natural beauty or cultural / historical significance. A large new full size golf course is being built at Pavlikeni as well. Pavlikeni is 41 km from Veliko Tarnovo.

Veliko Tarnovo ( or Veliko Turnovo as some say, Велико Търново in Cyrillic ), the historical capital of the 2nd Bulgarian Empire, has a population of 73,300 and is located on the Yantra River. It is one of the oldest settlements in Bulgaria, people lived there in the 3rd millennium B.C. as archaeological discoveries on Trapezitsa Hill have shown. Veliko Tarnovo, one of Bulgaria´s primary tourist destinations, boasts many historical monuments and landmarks including the ruins of the castle Tsarevets on the hill of the same name which housed the royal and patriarchal palace and Trapezitsa, the second fortress of the inner city on the right bank of the Yantra river.
Other attractions are the St Demetrius of Thessaloniki Church, St Forty Martyrs Church and the numerous Bulgarian National Revival buildings with their traditional architecture. There are also many museums, theatres, cinemas and various attractive parks. Younger people in particular appreciate Veliko Tarnovo for its nightlife – the many discos, night clubs, casinos, cyber cafés, piano bars and the pizzerias and other restaurants. Like the majority of Bulgaria, Veliko Tarnovo is virtually litter and crime free and is a lovely, stress-free place to wander around and discover the markets, parks, art galleries, magnificent buildings and excellent variety of shops. Astounding prices too - Pizzas and drinks for three people only costs around €10, good leather shoes from €10 too, good quality local wine for €1.50 a bottle, mouthwatering packets of biscuits and cakes from €0.75, €0.50 for a 500ml bottle of beer, a gourmet quality three course restaurant meal of traditional Bulgarian fare will cost around €40 for four including a good wine….Internationally known Brand names represented in local shops and Central Mall include Yves Rocher, Quicksilver, Benetton, Samsonite, Pepe Jeans, Sabotage, Sergio Tachini, Capasca, Kenvelo, Bianca, Levi´s, Denyl, Andrews, GEOX…all, of course, at Bulgarian prices!

The beautiful white sand Black Sea beaches are 1h30 away by car, Varna, with its famous beaches and international airport is approximately 1h30 away by car. There is also a bus service and train line linking Varna to Sofia running through Pavlikeni.

The Gabrovo ski slopes (very popular with skiers throughout Europe) are less than an hour away in the Balkan mountains.
